| The main religion of the Union of Myanmar is Buddhism; but other citizens can also enjoy freedom of worship. |
| Over 80% of the people of Myanmar professed Theravada Buddhism which is to be found flourishing in other neighboring countries like Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Laos, Thailand and Cambodia. |
 |
Besides the countless pagodas and monasteries, there are many churches, mosques, and Hindu temples throughout the country. Another name for Theravada Buddhism is "Hinayana" which is more conservative, more orthodox form of Buddhism. |
Generally speaking, Myanmar citizens are not as inclined to worship supernatural deities. But a few people still don't deny the existence of spirits or "nats" and still tribute them at the upper corners of their homes with coconuts or flowers.
Now, many Westerners have come to Myanmar to practice at the various meditation centers for period of time ranging from 10 days to more than a year. The most famous centers in Yangon are the Mahasi, the Chan Myei Yeiktha, the I.M.C etc.
